Lefty

The Loss of a Legend - Lefty Yurek

Florian (Lefty) Yurek, 94, of St. Paul, Minnesota died on December 7. Lefty was one of the founding members of St. Paul Officials Association and a true pioneer in Minnesota officiating. He served SPOA as Secretary/Treasurer, football and basketball assignor for over 40 years. He officiated football and basketball at the high school, DII and DIII for over 50 years. He worked countless MSHSL and NCAA tournaments and championship games in both sports. Later in his career he umpired fastpitch softball and adapted sports for the MSHSL and baseball at the Babe Ruth level. He was a recipient of the SPOA Golden Whistle Award for lifetime achievement and was honored by the Minnesota State High School League with the MSHSL Distinguished Service Award in 2014. Few, if any, contributed more to the institutions, student athletes and officials of the St. Paul area and the entire upper Midwest. He was an outstanding official, assignor, leader, mentor and friends.
